Ganesh Chaturthi, commonly known as Ganpati Chovoth Festival, is one of
the most celebrated festivals in Goa.Ganesh Chaturthi 2017 will begin on
Friday, 25 August and ends on Tuesday,5 September. The amazing 11 day
Ganesh Chaturthi carnival honors the birth of the much-loved Hindu
elephant-headed god, Lord Ganesha. The start of the celebration sees
huge, highly crafted statutes of Ganesha installed in homes and stage,
which have been specially constructed and beautifully decorated. At the
end of the celebration, the statutes are paraded through the streets,
accompanied by much playing and dancing, and then flooded in the ocean.
The mainly important and almost the national festival for Goan's is the
Ganesh Chaturthi known as 'Chovoth'. The celebrations run into several
days, at least two and half days, when puja of Gouri and Mahadev along
with Ganapati, is performed, Gouri being drawn on paper and Mahadev on a
coconut. On these days wedded women fast. On the Chovoth day, in the
morning or evening, an earth hero of Ganapati is brought home. Ahead of
that a pavilion or pandal is ready with bunches of betel nut, coconut,
bananas and branches of mango-trees being compulsory ingredients of it.
The puja is performed with the help of the priest.
